Nicaragua, IDB Sign US$15 Million Pact On
Children's Welfare
MANAGUA - The Nicaraguan government and the
Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have
signed an agreement, with the IDB granting
Nicaragua a loan for the "Urban Development
and Welfare of Children in Extreme Poverty,"
according to a senior Nicaraguan official.
Nicaraguan Treasury Minister Alberto Guevara
told a press conference that the loan,
totaling US$15 million, will benefit urban
children under three, particularly children
in extreme poverty.
Guevara said the agreement, signed on Friday
by him and Mirna Lievano, IDB Representative
in Nicaragua. The country's Family Ministry
will implement the agreement in the
following three years.
The first phase of the IDB-funded program
will be incorporated into the process of
social policy actions that benefit the
poorest children in the country's urban
areas.
"With this program we hope we can start
creating conditions for the poorest children
to get rid of extreme poverty," he said.
The second phase, he added, will focus on
improving the lives of many other poor urban
children by offering them assistance in line
with their health, nutrition and education
conditions, among others," he said.
