Transport Fare Rises Trigger Clash in
Argentina, 29 Detained
BUENOS AIRES - At least 29 people were
arrested and 12 police officers were injured
on Thursday during a clash in downtown
Cordoba city, triggered by a hike in public
transportation fares.
"There are 29 detainees, seven of whom were
followed till they entered the Public Works
Union building," chief police inspector
Nestro Gambarte told media.
The clash, during which three shops were
also damaged, took place near the building
of the Deliberation Council, where the local
legislative body convenes. The protestors,
who belong to leftist parties, voiced
disagreement over the public transportation
fare rises from 1.50 Argentine pesos (39
U.S. cents) to 2 pesos (52 U.S. cents).
"The police had to act, when it was attacked
by the protestors with Molotov bombs and
offensive elements," police said in a
statement.
