Guatemalan Teachers Announce Rallies for Budget

GUATEMALA - The teaching union of Guatemala announced different actions on Tuesday as a form to pressure the Congress to increase the budget of the sector, while the government appealed for a peaceful development of them.

Sources of the union told Prensa Latina about the mobilization of thousands of teachers, who can get to block important points in roads as the approaches to the city and even airports.

The main demand is to increase the budget item for the Ministry of Education for 2010 because the established sum will not guarantee the continuity of free education, for which they are asking for a meeting with members of the congress.

Secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency Ronaldo Robles affirmed that in case that the demonstrations are carried out, the dialogue will be used up to end them.

He warned, however, that if they do not get the expected results, "security forces reserve the use of the mechanisms established by law to guarantee the welfare of most of the population."
