TDMA
Cellular Customers Must Give Up Their Lines
Next Year
Subscribers of the TDMA cellular service
have to make a decision to migrate to the
GSM or 3G platform before the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE)
finalizes the handing over the radio
frequencies to the State, frequencies that
will be aviable for licensing to other
cellular operators.
The president of ICE, Pedro Pablo Quirós,
made the announcement from Casa Presidencial
following an agreement to relinquish the
frequencies as required by law.
The deal calls for the frequencies to be
available to the Ministerio de Ambiente y
Telecomunicaciones (Minaet) which will then
by way of the Superintendia de
Telecommunicaciones (Sutel) to be licensed
to private operators, who will compete with
ICE for cellular customers.
TDMA customers will not be automatically
switched over, each customer has to make a
choice to migrage to ICE's other two
platforms or lose the line completely, where
the initial security deposit will be
returned to the customer. |
