Thousands of Weapons Seized in Guatemala
GUATEMALA - Guatemala'sNational Civil Police
(PNC) seized 5, 614 weapons in Guatemala
from January to October this year, according
to a report published on Sunday.
Most of the weapons were confiscated from
drug-trafficking and organized crime groups,
among then 76 large-bore weapons such as
machine guns, rifles AK-47, M16, AR-15 and
332 fragmentation grenades.
According to the newspaper El Periodico
diary, PNC investigations stated that in the
country are in circulation around a million
of illegal weapons that come into the
country by blind spots in the borders with
Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico.
Izabal, Chiquimula, Jutiapa (east) y San
Marcos (west) are the departments with more
weapons trafficking by air, land and sea.
Last April in Guatemala came into effect the
Weapons and Ammunition Control Law, which
reduces from 4 to 1 the licences given to
each citizen to buy weapons.
