Evo Morales Warns of the Danger of US Bases
in Colombia
LA PAZ - Bolivian president Evo Morales has again
warned that the US bases in Colombia
threaten regional peace and integration.
At a graduation ceremony of Army and Navy
officers, the Head of State repeated his
proposal that referenda should be held
throughout South American to consult the
people about the convenience of having
foreign soldiers in the region.
Colombia and the United States signed a
controversial military agreement last
October by which the US military can use
strategic bases on Colombian territory, a
decision seen by many countries as a threat
to the region.
For Morales, one thing is relations between
countries that can be cordial and another
very different thing if any empire intends
to impose doctrines on the Armed Forces.
He repeated that in his position as Bolivian
President he will not allow any foreign
soldier to enter national territory and much
less to try to give orders to officials of
the country.
The presence of foreign military in South
America requires self military doctrine
without United States interference.
The President called on the Bolivian Armed
Forces to reaffirm their democratic vocation
in defense of the homeland and sovereignty,
and serve the people to whom they are bound.
Morales extolled the support the Bolivian
military provide to the democratic and
cultural revolution that began in 2006.
Currently the Armed Forces are loved by the
people and valued by the government, the
Statesman concluded. |
