Peru,
Brazil To Boost Regional Peace Amidst
Tension
LIMA - Leaders of Peru and Brazil agreed on
Friday to push forward "The Peace, Security
and Cooperation Protocol," which aims to
reduce military expenditure and create a
regional security force in South America.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia brought up
the Peace Protocol and formally proposed it
at a recent meeting of the Union of South
American Nations (Unasur) Defense Council.
In a joint statement, Garcia and his
visiting Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva said that regional military
cooperation should be kept transparent in
order to achieve mutual trust.
Against arms buildup, the Peace Protocol was
created to consolidate the region as a zone
of peace and boost regional trust.
The protocol comes at a time of diplomatic
tension in South America. Peru's recent
allegations of Chilean espionage and
incidents between Venezuela and Colombia
have strained political relations in the
region.
Garcia and Lula have held seven bilateral
meetings since they took office. During the
latest meeting, both presidents expressed
their satisfaction with cooperation in
energy, economy and trade.
