"Gordo" Lottery Sales Heat Up For Sunday's
Draw
With only two days to go sales of the “gordo
navideño” (Christmas lottery) finally heated
up.
The Gordo is the lottery with the largest
prizes and only happens once a year. This
year, however, sales have been slow as many
Costa Ricans decided to cut back until last
minute that is.
The lottery takes place Sunday night at 7pm
and the most sought out numbers this year is
13, the number coinciding with the date of
the draw, though the number has yet to fall
on the draw dates.
Other favourite numbers are 30 (winner of
three draws in 1960, 1968 and 1985) and the
numbers 03, 15, 33, 50, 62, 94 and 40, which
have all been drawn on at least two
occasions each.
Last year, the number 66 with series 299 was
the big winner.
The Junta de Protección Social (JPS), the
government agency that runs the lottery said
that 82% of the lottery tickets had been
sold by Friday evening. Lottery officials
had been concerned that the sales had been
slow.
The total prize tommorrow night is ¢4.35
billion colones divided in six issues. The
big prize for an "entero" (an entire ticket)
is ¢775 million colones, while the prize for
each of the 40 "fracción" (fractions) is
¢18.124.000 million.
The draw is held live, this year in the
Plaza de la Democracia. For those who cannot
attend the live event, it is broadcast live
on national television. |
