Construction of Bi-National Sixaola Bridge
In 2010
Panamanian and Costa Rican authorities are
likely to begin construction of a
bi-national bridge over the Sixaola river in
2010, the executive director of integration
initiative Mesoamérica Project, María Teresa
de Rendón said.
The bridge will cost an estimated US$13.4
million, and will be carried out as part of
the Mesoamérica Project, formerly known as
Plan Puebla-Panamá.
The project will be financed by a loan from
the Andean Development Corporation (CAF),
with 41% of funding approved for Panama and
59% for Costa Rica, de Rendón said.
The work will be carried out by the
countries' respective public works
ministries.
In 2005, then Costa Rican president Abel
Pacheco and Panama's Martín Torrijos agreed
to build a new bridge to replace the
existing structure, which has been in use
for over 100 years and currently serves 800
vehicles per day.
However, the project stalled due to a lack
of funding, de Rendón said.
The Mesoamérica Project was designed to
accelerate integration and boost sustainable
development in several Latin American
countries. Current member countries are
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua,
Panama and the Dominican Republic. |
