Committed To Gender Equality:
Minister
RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil
is committed to promoting gender equality,
and many achievements had been made in this
regard in the past few years, said a
Brazilian official on Thursday.
Minister of the Special Secretariat for
Women Policies, Nilcea Freire, said Brazil
was deeply committed to the United Nations'
International Conference on Population and
Development (ICPD), also known as the Cairo
Conference.
During the conference held in 1994, several
countries have set for themselves goals in
gender equality, which were to be achieved
by 2014.
Freire said Brazil was working toward these
goals, and was especially striving to
safeguard women's sexual and reproductive
rights.
"Brazil is one of the countries which have
been doing the utmost to fulfill the goals,"
said the minister, citing the reduction of
the infant mortality rate and better access
to contraceptive methods as improvements
made in the country.
However, she also maintained that there were
still challenges in this regard, such as
teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortions.
