Nicaraguans Detained for Deadly Ambush on
Navy Patrol Boats

(Bloomberg) -- Nicaraguan authorities
detained 14 suspects for involvement in an
ambush on navy patrol boats that left two
senior officers dead and five sailors
injured yesterday in the indigenous
Caribbean coastal community Walpasiksa,
police spokeswoman Vilma Reyes said.
Residents of the impoverished fishing
village 300 (483 kilometers) miles northeast
of Managua opened fire with automatic
weapons on 20 naval officers who came to
investigate reports that a plane carrying a
ton of cocaine had crashed in the area last
week, military spokesman Adolfo Zepeda said.
Police suspect the residents had divided up
the spoils from the plane, Reyes said in an
interview today.
About 40 soldiers and police entered the
isolated community of 700 by land and sea
today to make arrests, including an
indigenous woman in possession of $12,000
cash and a kilo of cocaine, Zepeda said
today by telephone..
Walpasiksa is in the jungle-laden North
Atlantic Autonomous Region on the Caribbean
coast, the poorest part of Nicaragua.
Traditionally known as the Mosquito Coast,
the region is largely inhabited by
indigenous peoples including the Miskito.
