Panama on Alert for Rise in Homicidal Rate
PANAMA - Nowadays the rise in homicide
figures concerns the Panamanian society,
worried about this tendency that rises
despite a greater police presence on the
streets.
According to the Direction of Judicial
Investigation (DIJ) report, 699 people were
murdered from January to November, 641 men
and 58 women.
That number exceeds the figures in 2008,
when 573 persons were killed due to these
crimes during the last year.
December statistics are still to be added to
the annual homicide rate. There have been
reported unofficially 10 murders during the
first week of this month.
In the first 11 months, 147 homicides were
committed related to quarrels, 83 executions
and 81 committed during robberies.
Studies also show that almost 50 percent of
the crimes occurred between Friday and
Monday evening each week.
The experts consider that most of the crimes
are related to drug trafficking, that is why
there are also actions aimed to struggle
that problem.
