Chavez Urges Obama to Be Consistent
CARACAS - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
urged his US peer Barack Obama on Monday to
act in line with promises of change made in
April during the Fifth Summit of the
Americas.
In a speech in a forum held on November
17-19 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago,
Obama called for a new start in US relations
with the region.
"On that day, Obama said he would not speak
about the past but rather about the future,
but look, Obama, Honduras is the past and
you are backing the past," said Chavez at
the inauguration of the International
Congress to mark the 10th anniversary of the
new Venezuelan Constitution.
Chavez' remarks respond to the Obama's
decision to recognize the recent elections
in Honduras, considered an attempt to
legitimize the coup of June 28 against
Manuel Zelaya.
"Honduras represents the ghosts of the past
that want to come and haunt us again, the
dictatorial regime under a civilian
makeover. This is the new code they want to
impose on Latin America," noted Chavez.
