Panama Seizes Over us$500,000 Of Unreported
Cash
PANAMA - The Panamanian authorities on
Monday seized more than us$500,000 dollars
in unreported cash from two Colombian
citizens at the International Airport of
Tocumen in Panama City.
"Both people had hidden money in suitcases
and they did not have any intention of
reporting (the money)," a agent with the
national customs authority told local TV
news Telemtetro Reporta.
According to the agent, the two Colombian
men arrived in Tocumen from Tegucigalpa,
Honduras. They were detained when they were
transferring to Colombia.
The two protested that the suitcases did not
belong to them, and that they knew nothing
about the money, according to the police.
The seizure was part of an operation dubbed
"Christmas without Smuggling," which is
being carried out at all major airports of
the country.
Because of its convenient geographical
location, Panama has often been used a
transshipment point for smuggled goods and
money.
