Gasoline Prices Going Up In Time For
Christmas Holiday
While Costa Ricans are euphoric with their
wallets full of cash with their aguinaldo,
the euphoria will soon pass when they have
to shell out more for gasoline with the
latest round of price hikes approved by the
Autoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicos (Aresep).
However, there is good news, this is the
last gasoline price hike of the year. We kid
you not.
On Friday the Aresep announced the approval
of a ¢24 colones price hike in the price of
a litre of super gasoline, ¢26 for a litre
of regular or plus 91 and ¢23 for a litre of
diesel.
A price hike was also approved for other
Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope)
products like natural gas, aviation gas and
kerosene.
The price hike will hit the pump in the
coming weeks, the day following the
publication of the increase in the official
government publication La Gaceta.
Although not date was given, La Gaceta stops
its presses on December 18 for the Christmas
vacation, thus the publication is expected
on that day or before. (Our educated guess
is Tuesday 15th or Wednesday 16th.)
The increase is based on price levels for
crude oil on international markets between
October 29 and November 12, based on the
dollar/colon exchange rate of November 12.
Once in effect the prices of gasoline will
go from the current ¢564 to ¢588 for a litre
of super; from ¢547 to ¢573 for regular; and
from ¢488 to ¢511 for diesel.
