Porteadores and Government Reach Agreement
A meeting between representatives of
porteadores, the ministro de Transportes,
Marco Vargas and the minstro de la
Presidencia, Rodrigo Arias, Monday resulted
in the stalling of the law that would
eliminate the porteo, the informal transport
of persons, from the current legislative
assembly agenda.
The porteadores called off temporarily a
protest to block traffic planned for Monday
when the goverment agreed to meet with group
to discuss the problem. With the agreement,
the porteadores have said that there will be
no protest.
José Alberto Alfaro, president of the Cámara
de Porteadores, said the government finally
saw the light, the inconstitutionality of
the proposal to remove the right of
porteadores to carry persons as contemplated
in the legislative reforms.
The agreement reached after hours of
discussion includes the creation of a
commission to propose a revised text to "proyecto
17372" as it pertains to the porteo.
With the agreement, Alfaro and other
representatives of the porteadores said that
there is no need for protest as had been
threatened and will be meeting with the
porteadores on Thursday to give them the
details of the agreement.
