Brazil Boosts Medical Assistance for Men
Brasilia - The
National Policy of Integral Health Asistance
for Men encourages 2.5 million Brazilian men
to seek health services at least once a
year, to prevent diseases related to that
sex.
Presenting these official measures, the
Brazilian Health Ministry said they intend
to increase urological procedures and family
planning, as vasectomies.
To implement these measures the government
allocated 613,2 million reales (around $310
million) until 2011. A sixth of that amount
will be devoted to actions to increase the
number of vasectomies, of prostate
ultrasound and surgeries of the masculine
genital tract.
The Health Minister, Jose Gomes Temporaro,
asserted that lacking a plan in this area
had brought about unease for a long time,
because "we have health policies for
anything we can imagine, but not for men who
live in a rather delicate situation in
relation to mortality.
Figures of this ministry show that of every
three adults who die in this nation, two are
men.
He estimated that application of this new
policy is a challenge to the health system,
because it demands structural changes, as
the fact that it is necessary that nurses
and physicians pay more attention to
masculine illnesses. |
