Guatemala Trial on Missing People
Continues
Guatemala - Public hearings in the first trial for
forced disappearances in Guatemala, during
the internal armed conflict, still continue
in this country on Thursday, when the
sentence will be possibly announced.
The presentation of the rest of the
documentary evidence against the accused and
the final conclusions by the sides are
scheduled for Monday at the courtroom in the
city of Chimaltenango, 71 miles northwest
from this capital.
Former military commissioner Felipe Cusanero
is accused of the disappearance of six
farmers from the village of Choatalum in
Chimaltenango department, in the period
between November 5, 1982 and October 28,
1984.
The hearing, termed as a historic trial in
the country, started Wednesday, with the
reading of the evidence presented by the
plaintiffs, based on reports about outrages
committed by military and security forces
during the war.
Sources of the Center for Legal Action on
Human Rights told Prensa Latina news agency
in a telephone interview that the verdict
could be announced today after the trial
legal sides present the final conclusions. |
