Canada Beats Costa Rica In Women's World Volleyball Qualification

Canada defeated Costa Rica in straight sets Friday in its opening match at the NORCECA women's volleyball world championship qualification tournament.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-22. Tiffany Dodds led Canada with 17 points from 16 kills and one block. Tammy Mahon scored 12 points while Brittney Page added nine, including three blocks.

"The heat slowed us today, especially our starts," Canadian coach Arnd Ludwig said. "However after the first technical timeout of each set we really became strong and Costa Rica did not have a chance to win."

Canada, ranked 23rd in the world, will also face Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago at the tournament.

The top two teams will earn the final berths from North and Central America and the Caribbean for next October's 2010 world championships in Japan.
