Limón Carnival And Year End Festivals
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila,
confirmed on Friday that her officials are
considering a possible suspension of the
traditional year end celebrations like the
Festival de la Luz and the Zapote and
Palmares festivals.
The ministra said the cancellation depends
on the AH1N1 situation as the time nears.
The events generate a large number of
concentration of people, not only in San
José, but in the country as a whole and may
have to be cancelled as they occur during
the expected second wave of the AH1N1 virus.
The first of the festivals to be affected
will be the Carnavales de Limón which occur
in October. This year the carnival is set
for October 8 to 18.
Although a decision may be made to cancel
the carnival, organizers are continuing in
their plans for permits.
Ministra Ávila said that the organizers of
the Carnavales de Limón and the people will
understand if the decision to cancel is
made.
The ministra also alluded that the
cancellation of the festivals will also
depend on the arrival of the vaccine.
According tot he ministra, the Organización
Panamericana de la Salud is arranging for
the purchase of 400 million doses for Latin
America, negotiating directly with the
pharmaceuticals.
Although no firm numbers and dates are
available, Costa Rica is expected to receive
400.000 doses in November. |
