Salvador to Celebrate Independence
San Salvador - With civic parades and
torchlight marches throughout the country El
Salvador prepares to celebrate the 188t
anniversary of its independence from Spain.
The festivities are scheduled to begin on
September 1 in the city of Suchitoto and
will last the entire month. They also have
the purpose of emphasizing values such as
respect, union, honesty and solidarity said
the Government minister, Humberto Centeno.
The central event will be held in this
capital where, for the first time the
president of the Republic, Mauricio Funes
will preside the traditional parades of
students, soldiers and police, Centeno
commented.
Funes will also go to the border point of
Las Chinamas to receive from his Guatemalan
counterpart, Alvaro Colom, the Central
American torch of independence that will be
carried throughout El Salvador between
September 5 and 6.
In contrast to previous years the patriotic
marches the torch will not be taken to
Honduras as rejection of Central American
nations against the de facto regime that
took power after a coup on June 28.
The Central American nations integrated in
the General Captaincy of Guatemala
proclaimed their independence from Spain on
September 15, 1821 after three centuries of
colonial domination. |
