Safe Regions to Control Violence in El
Salvador
San Salvador - The Salvadoran government
launched the Safe Territory Project aimed to
prevent violence through an integral support
to the municipalities that have a high crime
rate.
Through this initiative resources are set
aside to face social, economic and
environmental problems and to implement
projects for young people such as
development of education and sports.
"The challenge of this program is to reach
out and its long term or long term results
will be observed when young people occupy
their time instead of being excluded," said
Guillermo Galvan, sub secretary for
territorial development and
decentralization.
Safe Territories will be fire applied in 11
municipalities of different regions of the
country such as the metropolitan, central,
eastern and western regions.
Salvadorian president, Mauricio Funes,
expressed willingness of the government to
confront criminality, problems inherited
from previous administrations.
"There is an iron will to combat delinquency
an we will send out clear signals," Funes
said in a meeting with representatives of
social, business, political and religious
sectors as well as the diplomatic corps.
According to figures of the National
Civilian Police murders went down from 384
cases in May to 278 in August.
However, cases of extortion increased 56
percent during this part of 2009 as compared
to the previous year.
Funes called on unity of all sectors of
society to join the government in search of
effective measures against this scourge. |
