Says "Dialogue Process"

Quito - Ecuadorian
Foreign Minister Fander Falconi said
Wednesday that Ecuador and Colombia should
adopt a "dialogue process," rather than
merely a handshake, to stagger out of their
diplomatic impasse.
Falconi told the press that necessary
measures to resolve the standoff should be
understood as a process of dialogue, instead
of a panacea-like handshake.
"This is going to be a process," because the
dispute emerged from "a violation to our
sovereignty," the minister said, referring
to the Colombian military's unilateral
cross-border raid against a Colombian
guerrilla camp on Ecuadorian territory on
March 1, 2008.
In protest, Ecuador severed diplomatic ties
with Colombia as quickly as anything, which
have yet to be resumed.
Falconi said, "There are a series of
requirements set by the Ecuadorian
government for the restoration of the
diplomatic ties."
The top diplomat also criticized an intended
U.S.-Colombia agreement to allow U.S. access
to military bases in Colombia, saying it may
cast a shadow on neighboring countries'
security.
