Venezuela Preparing To Sever Ties With
Colombia, Says Chavez
Caracas - Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday said his
country is preparing to sever relations with
Colombia over disputes relating to the
latter's decision to allow U.S. military
access to its bases, local media reported.
Chavez said there is no possibility of
repairing ties with the Colombian government
and told Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro to
"begin preparing for the rupture with
Colombia."
Chavez froze diplomatic ties with Colombia
on July 28 due to a Colombia-U.S. military
agreement which allows U.S. troops to use
Colombian military bases for combating
terrorism and drug trafficking in the
region.
Chavez has repeatedly said that the military
agreement represents a bigger threat to
Latin America.
