San José -
Escazú Alternate Road Now Open
Traveling to and from San José and Escazú is
now easier with the opening of the "VÍA
ALTERNA", completely bypassing the autopista
Próspero Fernández.
The new road 1.7 kilometre from La Sabana
now connects directly to Escazú was
officially opened in a ribbon cutting
ceremony by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas
y Transportes (MOPT) and the ministro de la
Presidencia, Rodrigo Arias.
In typical Costa Rican fashion the road has
no name, it can only be described as the
alternate road to Escazú.
The road connects from La Sabana in the area
known as Calle Morenos, south of the
Contraloria (the strange looking building on
the south side of the Sabana park) to the
area of San Felipe de Alajuelita,
immediately west of the Riteve vehicle
inspection station.
The road was built by the Autopistas del
Sol, the same people who are currently
building the road to Caldera, under contract
by the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi)
at a cost of us$10 million dollars.
The objective of the road is to ease traffic
on the autopista Próspero Fernández and the
time it takes to travel from San José to
Escazú, the Hatillos and Alajuelita.
And of course, in typical Costa Rican
fashion, transportation authorities do not
take everything into consideration before
embarking on a project, thus residents of
the area have already begun to complain of
the lack of a pedestrian overpass, being
forced to cross a road that is expected to
be heavily traveled. |
