Tons Of Drugs
Panama City - The
Panamanian authorities burned 6,040 kg of
drugs Friday, the latest demonstration of
the country's resolution to fight narco-trafficking.
The drugs were destroyed in a garbage dump
called "Cerro Patacon" in Panama City.
Javier Carrillo, director of the National
Police's Judicial Investigation Direction,
said the destroyed drugs included 5,983 kg
of cocaine, 49.43 kg of marijuana and 8.24
kg of heroine.
Carrillo said the drugs were seized during
the sixth operation carried out by the
country's anti-drug authorities in 2009.
According to Carrillo, the drugs were
confiscated while they were being
transported for sale in the United States
and Europe, the main drug markets.
On July 31, Panama burned another six tons
of drugs seized in June and July. Panamanian
authorities reported the seizure of more
than 55 tons of drugs last year.
One kg of cocaine costs 4,000 U.S. dollars
in Panama while the price is as high as
15,000 dollars in the United States.
Drug seizures have mainly occurred in
Panama's Pacific and Atlantic coasts,
bordering Colombia. |
