Book About
Guanacaste Abounds With Stories and
Landscapes
(InfoWebPress) – The province of Guanacaste
in once again the source of inspiration for
a new book.
The new volume, available in both Spanish
and English, is titled Guanacaste Rutas de
viaje (Guanacaste Travel Routes). It
includes tours of volcanoes, traditions,
pre-Columbian routes, haciendas, parks,
protected areas and beaches. The book tells
hidden or little-known stories about each
place and delves into the transformation of
the province’s landscape and the drastic
changes this place has experienced since it
became an international tourism hotspot.
Its authors, Luciano Capelli and Yazmin
Ross, point out that since time immemorial,
Guanacaste has been a territory of
travelers, of marine and land routes
traversed by whales, turtles, Indigenous
cultures, travelers from other centuries and
modern tourists.
Guanacaste Travel Routes contains hundreds
of photographs of remote places that
capture, with particular sensitivity, the
scenic beauty and popular spirit of the
province — not ignoring the tourism or
picturesque perspective, but attempting to
reveal a Guanacaste unknown and unexplored.
A place of memories that remains in the
psyche of thousands of Costa Ricans who have
spent unforgettable vacations or seasons
under the sun of this province.
Available in hard cover, the 280-page title
is the result of two years of work and
constant visits to Guanacaste by
photographer and filmmaker Capelli and
writer Ross. Both have collaborated on an
important body of work, including
audiovisual production, music, children’s
literature and photo-historical books such
as La Pasion por el Caribe (Passion for the
Caribbean, 2003) — of which the new title
about Guanacaste is basically a twin.
The book was financed by the brothers
Anselmo and Rizziero Baldini, natives of
Rimini, Italy, who in 2000 moved to Playas
del Coco and developed a tourism complex
called Playa de las Palmas. They also
created the Natura Cultura Foundation to
support environmental and cultural projects
in Guanacaste. The book was also financed by
the authors themselves, who edited
Guanacaste Travel Routes under a new,
independent editorial company, Ojala
Ediciones.
The book is available at all Libreria
Internacional bookstores, at Café Britt
stores, in tourism shops and in the main
supermarkets around the country. Suggested
retail price is 28,000 colones ($48).
Each chapter in the book deals with a land
or marine route, which is traversed by music
and images of the concerts that renowned
pianist Manuel Obregon offers at various
venues to advertise the book — including
traditional Guanacaste songs such as “La
chichera,” “Nostalgia en la pampa,” and “El
Danzon de Pianguita,” in addition to other
tunes popular in the province and songs
included in his album Piano Malango (Papaya
Music).
