Overturns Decision Obligating The Caja To
Perform In Vitro Fertilization
The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS)
decision to perform in vitro fertilization
of a woman who had requested the procedure
was overturned by the Sala Primera.
The Costa Rican social security had been
ordered to perform the procedure after the
woman won a court decision against the CCSS.
The CCSS appealed the court decision and
this week the original court ordered was
overturned.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process by
which egg cells are fertilized by sperm
outside the womb, in vitro. IVF is a major
treatment in infertility when other methods
of assisted reproductive technology have
failed. The process involves hormonally
controlling the ovulatory process, removing
ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and
letting sperm fertilize them in a fluid
medium. The fertilized egg (zygote) is then
transferred to the patient's uterus with the
intent to establish a successful pregnancy.
