Panama's Wholesale Prices Fell 6.75%
On Stronger Dollar
Panama -
Panama's wholesale prices fell 6.75% in the
first half of this year as a result of a
stronger dollar, which is legal tender in
Panama, the Economy and Finance Ministry
said Thursday in a statement.
Besides the stronger dollar, the other
factor that explains the price decline in
Panama is the low or lack of inflation in
the countries that supply goods to the
Central American nation, the statement said.
Consumer prices in Panama rose 1.8% over the
12-month period through June, down from a
6.8% increase in the full 2008.
Kathryn Rooney, a market analyst with
Miami-based investment bank Bulltick, said
inflation will end the year at around 4%, as
a consequence of recovering oil prices.
Rooney expects the country's economy to rise
2.5% this year and 4% in 2010.
