Complete Talks Over
Military Bases
Bogota - Colombia said on
Friday that it had completed talks with the
United States over the use of Colombian
military bases.
The two countries reaffirmed their joint
commitment to fight drug-trafficking and
terrorism in the region, the Foreign
Ministry said in a statement.
The text of an agreement has been reviewed
by government agencies before getting a
final approval, it added.
Under the agreement, Washington could gain
access to at least seven Colombian military
bases by the year 2019, and in return,
Washington would offer Bogota some 5 billion
U.S. dollars in aid.
Though the United States and Colombia have
said the plan was designed to strengthen
Colombia's anti-drug and anti-rebel efforts,
many South American countries have voiced
their concerns.
