Population Reaches 191.5
Million
Rio de Janeiro - The
Brazilian population reached 191.5 million,
up from 189.6 million year-on-year, the
Brazilian Institute of Geography and
Statistics (IBGE) said Friday.
According to the IBGE, Sao Paulo state had
the largest population in Brazil with a
total of 41.4 million inhabitants, followed
by Minas Gerais state with 20 million and
Rio de Janeiro state with 16 million.
All three states are located in Brazil's
southeastern region and comprise about 40
percent of the Brazilian population.
About 34 million Brazilians, or 18 percent
of the country's population, lived in the 10
most populated municipalities, which are all
state capitals.
The city of Sao Paulo had the largest
population among the 5,565 municipalities in
Brazil with 11 million inhabitants, followed
by Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.
Bora, a little town in Sao Paulo state, had
the smallest population in the country with
837 inhabitants.
