Colombia Senator Gives FARC Hostage

Colombian Senador Piedad Cordoba confirmed
on Sunday that the life proves of a group of
detainees by the Revolutionary Armed Forces
of Colombia (FARC) are already in the
national capital.
After her return on Saturday from Caracas,
where she met with Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez, Cordoba told the media those proves
have not been handed over, because the
person in charge of receiving them is not in
Bogota.
She also said those are life proves from six
or eight of those held by the guerrilla
group, although she clarified not knowing
who they are or if non-commissioned officer
Pablo Emilio Moncayo is among them.
However, she asserted that the prisoner's
identities would be known in the next hours
and if a new addressee or recipient of the
life proves.
The senator also announced that the group of
Colombian Men and Women for Peace, which is
led by her, proposed to the FARC removing
all hindrances and freeing all the
detainees.
She said the objective is to stop thinking
about a war, after considering that
conditionings are hindrances to make
progress in the humanitarian exchange and
the efforts to find a solution to the
internal conflict. President Alvaro Uribe
authorized Cordoba in July to mediate in the
process to release those detained by the
FARC.
After several months rejecting the idea and
even prohibiting any action by the senator
in that reference, Uribe finally accepted,
on condition that the 24 people in the hands
of the FARC are also released and three
corpses of police agents are handed over. |
