11 Ecuadorian soldiers detained in
Colombia
Bogota - The Colombian
Army had detained 11 Ecuadorian soldiers on
Colombian territory and handed them over to
the Ecuadorian side, the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of Colombia said Sunday.
The Colombian Army captured the soldiers in
Colombia 300 meters away from the
Colombia-Ecuador border in Putumayo
province, the ministry said in a statement.
The statement said the soldiers had been
treated in Colombia with respect and dignity
and transferred to their superiors at the
San Miguel international bridge, which
connects the two countries.
Ecuador broke up diplomatic ties with
Colombia in March, 2008, after the Colombian
military unilaterally crossed the border to
crack down on Colombian rebels.
The two countries have had border frictions
from time to time since then.
