Venezuela: Poverty Reduced 22.6 Percent
Caracas - Poverty in Venezuela was reduced by
22.6 percent during the decade of the
government of President Hugo Chavez,
reported the president of the National
Institute of Statistics (NIS), Elias Eljuri.
Eljuri told the press the indexes of poverty
for the country were significantly lowered
during the past 10 years according to
preliminary results of the first six month
period of 2009 by the Survey of Homes by
Sampling.
"Poverty has been reducing during the past
10 years in an important manner from 49
percent in 1998 to 26.5 percent in 2009,"
the official informed.
He pointed out that the mean of this
indicator of development during the previous
government of Rafael Caldera was maintained
at 60 percent while during the Chavez
presidency the figure registered is 21
percent.
Questions, he explained, were applied to
more than 40,000 homes throughout the
national territory and are a historic number
among national surveys.
For the first time, he noted, measurement of
this kind covers this size of universe as
opposed to usual numbers of no more than
2,000 interviewees. |
