ICE Says Not To Accept Its Cheques As Payment

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) warns that people should not accept payment by cheques of any kind from the institution following a series of reports of fraud by scam artists.

ICE says that it will make payment for services and goods only by cash or institution cards to avoid possible fraud by individuals claiming to be officials of ICE and using cheques from ICE drawn on state banks.

ICE says it has received reports from businesses in San Carlos, Zarcero, Poás, San Isidro de Peñas Blanas, San Ramón and Palmares.

It appears that individuals passing themselves off as ICE officials have been making purchases and paying for them by cheque, which ICE has not authorized.

The decision is of suspending all payments by cheque will avoid any further fraud.
