Heredia Commuter Train To be Under Watchful
Eye Of The Fuerza Pública (Police)
To ensure security on the commuter train
service between Heredia and San José which
begins Monday morning, the Instituto
Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer) -
Costa Rican railway - says the train will be
patrolled by uniformed members of the Fuerza
Pública (police).
Érick Lacayo, director of the Fuerza Pública,
confirmed that attention that the police
will give to the commuter train.
Lacayo explained that even though last week
there was talk of using plain clothes and
undercover officers on the route, he
believes that "preventive" patrols are more
effective and thus has ordered uniformed
officers on the train.
The top police official said in this way
criminals will think twice before taking the
train with the intent of committing attacks.
Miguel Carabaguíaz, president of the Incofer,
explained that the Apolo trains are equipped
with radio telecommunications that can
report to the railway central who can then
contact the local police detachment.
Carabaguíaz said that the train cars are
also equipped with cameras and train
personnel can detect any irregularities and
contact the officers on board.
The commuter train service is expected to
carry some 5.000 people daily (250 people
per run) with service every 30 minutes
between 5:30am and 8:30am and 4:30pm and 8pm
Monday to Friday.
