US Bases in Colombia Destabilizing
Quito - The installation of US military
bases in Colombia will destabilize Latin
America and affect more the neighboring
nations, said Emilio Izquierdo, an
Ecuadorean delegate to the Union of South
American Nations (UNASUR).
It is a Colombian internal decsion, but it
will negatively affect the whole area, said
Izquierdo, who ruled out the inclusion of
the issue in the agenda of the upcoming
meeting of heads of State of UNASUR in
Quito.
He said that in the meeting, Chilean
President Michelle Bachelet is expected to
hand over the pro tempore presidency of the
organization to Ecuadorean President Rafael
Corream who will start a new mandate in this
country on Monday.
He did not rule out the mention of the US
bases issue by the dignitaries during the
meeting, as it triggers great concern, but
said it will be discussed by the South
American Defense Council, made up of Defense
ministers of UNASUR, in a meeting scheduled
for next month.
Izquierdo noted that Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe was invited to attend this
meeting, but he learned by press reports
that Uribe has refused to attend. |
