Heredia - San
José Train To Be Inaugurated Today
The Heredia - San José commuter train
expects to take some 5.000 people off the
roads daily, easing traffic congestion
between the Ciudad de la Flores (Heredia)
and Chepe (San José).
Although the train begins regular commuter
service on Monday (August 10), the train
will be inaugurated this morning as the
Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer)
finally was able to put the service on
track.
The service will take passengers between the
station in Heredia centro to the Estación
del Ferrocarril al Atlántico, diagonal to
the East side of the Parque Nacional, with
two stops in between at Santo Domingo and 4
Reinas de Tibás.
The commuter service will operate only in
the mornings (5:30am to 8:30pm) and
afternoon (4:30pm to 8pm) weekday rush hours
and cost ¢350 colones each way, according to
Miguel Carabaguíaz, president of the Incofer.
In contrast, a bus ride between Heredia and
San José costs ¢320 and ¢390 colones,
depending on the route, and takes much more
than the 30 minutes than the train ride.
The cost to get the Heredia train moving was
¢2.4 billion colones, which included
improvements to the existing track which had
been abandoned for years and the purchase of
four locomotives and cars from Spain. |
