Caja Seeking Damages In Fischel-CCSS Fraud
Case
The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS)
or Caja as it is popularly known, has asked
the Tribunal Penal de Goicoechea for costs
of us$49 million dollars as part of damages
claimed against the eight accused in the
fraud and embezzlement trial known as th
Fischel-CCCSS, that includes former Costa
Rican president and 2010 presidential
candidate, Rafael Ángel Calderón.
William Rodríguez, lawyer for the Caja, said
that the amount should be paid by the
accused and the companies, the O. Fischel R.
y Cía. and the Corporación Fischel, as one
group.
Rodríguez, in his statement to the court
justices as is custom for victims of a crime
to do in Costa Rica, said that the Caja was
injured with the purchase of unnecessary
medical equipment and for the overpayment.
The lawyer added that the eight accused also
caused irreperable moral damage to the
institution.
The Caja is today, according to the lawyer,
paying interest and other costs due to the
fraud, costs that include adapting the
equipment for its use since it was made
without any planning.
In addition to Calderón, accused in the case
are: Walter Reiche, former president of the
Corporación Fischel; Eliseo Vargas, former
president of the CCSS; Gerardo Bolaños,
former director of the CCSS; Juan Carlos
Sánchez, former generte de modernización;
Marvin Barrantes, former gerente general de
O. Fischel R.; Olman Valverde, former
gerente financiero de Fischel; and Randall
Vargas, former legal director of the Fischel.
The trial is coming to its finals days and
the future of the Calderón candidacy to be
re-elected president of the country hangs in
the court's decision. |
