Mother's Day is around the corner and many a
budge is being stretched thin to give mom
that perfect gift. And waiting to the last
minute will end up being even more
expensive.
The Ministerio de Economía, Industria y
Comercio (MEIC) says that is has found up to
¢100.000 colones in the price of the same
product at different retailers around the
country.
Several examples offered by the MEIC study
that is carried out before important
holidays like Mother's Day, shows that
cellular phones, appliances and personal
care products are among the most sought by
gift givers.
This year and in anticipation of the 3G
cellular network a large variety of high-end
cellular phones are available. A hairdryer
by JyM can cost ¢15.000 colones, but a
similar one by GAMA can run ¢72.000.
The MEIC study shows that shoppers have to
look at the price tag very carefully and
definitely shop around. The MEIC cites the
cost of a Proctor electric frying pan that
sells at one store for ¢22.780, while for
¢44.450 at another.
Although many leave the Mother's Day gift
shopping until the last minute, taking
advantage of retailers offering sales, the
advice of the MEIC is to shop early and be
informed.
Mother's Day in Costa Rica is August 15 and
is a legal holiday.
