Guatemala Judges Claim Security
Guatemala - After the recent assassination
of a judge in this capital, her peers and
other Guatemalan judges are demanding today
stricter security measures, due to their
complex work.
Flor de Maria Gil, aged 64 and president of
the 12 working and welfare court, was shot
dead on Saturday, when she was in her car.
Witnesses asserted that two supposed hired
assassins shot her from a motorcycle, a
common style in this country for that kind
of attacks.
Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) President
Carlos Chacon said protection to judges is a
priority.
"We are vulnerable without security and like
this, society can not claim that there is
impunity," Supreme Court Judge Association
Secretary Silvia Leon asserted, during a
posthumous homage paid to Gil at the CSJ
headquarters.
The Attorney's Office of Crimes against
Justice Operators asserted to have received
reports, from January to July, about death
threats and attacks against judges and
attorneys that had participated in inquiries
of the so called great-impact cases.
However, Gil did not appear in that
register, because she never reported to have
been threatened. |
