Bolivia: Evo Morales Nixes US Bases
La Paz - President of Bolivia Evo
Morales again rejected on Wednesday the
installation of US military bases in Latin
America and his country's call to the Union
of South American Nations (UNASUR) to reject
such plans.
In a press conference at Quemado Palace,
Morales said he will make the proposal to
UNASUR at the summit of August 10 in Quito
to jointly prevent the presence of foreign
military troops in the region.
Morales' stand responds to Colombia's plans
to sign this month an extension of its
military agreement with the United States,
including the use of seven bases of the
Colombian armed forces by US troops.
The Bolivian president recalled how
Bolivians were victims of outrage by US
military presence, mainly in the Chapare
area, in the tropic of Cochabamba.
"The installation of US bases in Latin
America represents a blatant aggression to
regional sovereignty and dignity," said
Morales. |
