Bolivia Boosts Coca Crop Surplus Eradication
La Paz - The Bolivian
government eradicated 49,698 acres of excess
coca leaf crops in 2006 and 8127 acres the
current year, respecting human rights,
official sources reported.
Social Defense Minister Felipe Caceres said
this policy resulted from an agreement with
farmers and growers of the ancient plant.
Caceres explained that Evo Morales'
administration is boosting this plan,
without using violence, as other neoliberal
governments that caused the death of 40
people and wounds to more than 550 others
between 1999 and 2003.
He also said they used the democratic method
of reaching an agreement with the
farmworkers to avoid plantation increase.
The official announced that in 2009, they
would comply with the regulation that
established eradication of 12,355 acres per
year.
