Reopens Following Weekend Closure
It was shortly after 4am this morning,
Monday, that work crews removed the last
barrier that shut down completely the
westbound lanes of the autopista Genaral
Cañas at the virilla bridge, that had been
closed since Saturday morning.
The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi)
workers are confident that the weekend work
on the bridge will take this time and not
breakdown like the work performed on the
bridge two weekends ago, that also required
a complete shut down of the highway, last
less than 48 hours.
This time workers replaced the metal plate
which had been used to patch up the bridge
for almost a year, with a concrete expansion
joing.
Benjamín Sandino, head of the Conavi,
explained that the repair has to allow for
the natural movement of the bridge and a
special joint compound was used during this
repair effort.
Meanwhile, traffic congestion from San José
to Alajuela was not that bad this time
around, as many decided to stay home this
weekend and not travel west from San José,
although traffic around La Uruca and the
Juan Pablo II bridge was heavier than most
weekdays.
Two weekends ago traffic congestion in La
Uruca and Santa Ana, the two alternate
routes, created a traffic nightmare as it
took up to three hours to move from La
Sabana to the airport, a trip that takes not
more than 15 minutes during normal traffic.
