Biometric Electoral Register in Bolivia
La Paz - The National
Electoral Court (CNE) started on Saturday to
imlement a biometric electoral register of
nearly four million voters in Bolivian
departments for the upcoming elections in
December.
This method will start with the registration
of President Evo Morales in El Chapare
region, where he emerged as a main union
leader of the six federations of coca leave
producers.
The government has shown full support to the
CNE, providing $45 million to secure the
drafting of the modern electoral roll,
including the fingerprints, signature and a
photo of each voter.
According to CNE Chief Antonio Costas, who
is expected to accompany Morales in his
registration, everything is ready for the
registration of all the voters up to October
15.
He explained that the process will start
gradually today in rural areas and continue
in the next few days until all small and
medium towns are covered.
On December 6, Bolivians are expected to
elect the president and vice president of
the nation, as well as the members of the
Plurinational Legislative Assembly (the name
Congress will bear in 2010).
On that same day, six regions are also
expected to decide on their autonomous
status (La Paz, Oruro, Cochabamba,
Chuquisaca, Potosi and Gran Chaco). |
