Week Begins Tomorrow in Costa Rica
Tomorrow at 9:30am begins breastfeeding week
in Costa Rica with the slogan "Breastfeeding
vital for emergency response: are we
ready?", as part of the World Breastfeeding
Week that began on August 1st in the
Americas, which focuses this year on the
importance of breastfeeding in the first
hour of life.
World Breastfeeding Week, observed the first
week of August every year by the countries,
the Pan American Health Organization, and
other agencies, aims to spread information
globally about the importance of
breastfeeding for maternal and child health.
In the Americas, ministries of health,
non-governmental organizations, and families
are observing the week in a variety of ways,
including conferences, parades, art shows,
and special events.
In Costa Rica, the Caja Costarricense de
Seguro Social, the Ministerio de Salud and
the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias are,
together, will insist on the habit, even in
emergencies, to increase the protection of
children.
As part of the celebrations, on Friday
between 9am and 2pm there will be a "mamaferia"
at the Hospital de las Mujeres (Women's
hospital in San José) and Sunday will be the
"mamatón" in the park in Zarcero.
Sonia Chavez, of the área de Atención
Integral en Salud de la CCSS, is
recommending that all mothers taking part in
the event drink lots of fluids, extra food
and nutrients that help in building up
natural defenses.
Breastfeeding week in Costa Rica is days
ahead of the most important day and holiday
in the country: Día de la Madre (Mother's
Day) which is on August 15.
