Cuba Communists Agree to Postpone Party
Congress
Havana - The 7th
Cuban Communist Party (PCC) Central
Committee Plenary Session agreed to postpone
its 6th Congress until the current situation
and the nation's prospects are analyzed
comprehensively, with the party members and
all the people.
Speaking about holding that meeting, Cuban
President Raul Castro explained that it ca
not be just one more event, according to a
press release published by Granma daily.
He said that as a fact of life, it is
probably the last party congress to be
presided over by the Revolution's historic
leadership.
He also said we are already analyzing really
serious issues.
The main subject is economy, what we have
done and what has to be improved or even
eliminate, because we are faced with the
imperative of doing calculations well of
what the country has at its disposal or what
we have to live on and develop ourselves.
First, it is imperative to conclude the
party's preparation, after holding debates
with the whole population, and holding the
congress, only when that long process has
concluded, he said.
If we want to hold a true congress, seeking
solutions to the problems and looking to the
future, it should be so. "It has to be the
people, led by their party, those who
decide," the Cuban president asserted.
Raul Castro tackled the complex challenges
to the country, especially in the economic
sphere, and the importance of not forgetting
defense.
The important meeting's agenda included
issues related to the party's work, defense
and the necessary measures to adopt
immediately to face up to the impact of the
economic crisis that is currently affecting
the whole world.
Members of the State and Minister Councils,
the party's first secretaries to the
national provinces, the central leaders of
mass organizations that are not current PCC
Central Committee members and other guests
attended the plenary session.
