Fiscalía Asks
24 Years Prison For Former President
Calderón
The Ministerio Público, in its closing
arguments, petitioned the judges of the
Tribunal de Juicio de Goicoechea find former
president (1990-1994) and 2010 presidential
candidate, Rafael Ángel Calderón, guilty and
to send him to prison for 24 years for his
role in the fraud and embezzlement
Caja-Fischel case.
The public prosecutor, Juan Carlos Cubillo,
said in his closing arguments that there the
Ministerio Público has provided sufficient
evidence, both in document and personal
testimony, to find the former president
guilty.
The prosecution also asked the court to find
the other seven accused in the case guilty
and for a sentence of between four and
twenty years.
Cubillo asked the judges to sentence Eliseo
Vargas, former president of the CCSS; Juan
Carlos Sánchez, former manager of
modernization at the CCSS; Gerardo Bolaños,
former director of the CCSS; Marvin
Barrantes, former general manager of the
Fischel pharmacy chain; and Olman Valverde,
former financial director of the Fischel, to
twenty years each.
All have been charged with corruption and
embezzlement.
The prosecutor went lenient on Walter Reiche,
former president of the Fischel and Randal
Vargas, former legal director of the Fischel,
asking the court a sentence of four years
and three years and six months,
respectively. It is suspected that the
Ministerio Público negotiated a plea deal
with Reiche in turn for a lighter sentence.
According to the prosecutor, the lower
sentence for Reiche is for his demonstration
of remorse in the case. For Randall Vargas,
he is only accused of destroying documents.
Without a question, former president
Calderón maintained firm there is not one
shred of proof that involves him in any
crime and that the judges will find that in
the deliberations.
The lawyers for the other accused refused
any comment on the prosecutor's petition.
Next week the defense lawyers will begin
their closing arguments. |
