New Police Director
Orders Patrols To Use
Siren As Preventive
Measure Against Crime
The new director of the
Fuerza Pública, Erick
Lacayo, issued an order
for all police vehicles
to sound their sirens at
different times during
the day. The practice is
"preventive measure" in
the force's battle
against crime.
Lacayo said that for
reasons of security he
could not offer details
of his director and
could only say that the
sirens won't be heard at
the same time around the
country, but rather will
be random in specific
points.
The director did say
that the practice will
begin this week and will
be respectful of the
citizens, without
offering details, saying
that residents won't
have to lose sleep
because of the sirens.
Security experts say
that the Fuerza Pública
has to clear of its
objectives and not offer
only propaganda.
Manuel Mora, one of
those experts who talked
to the Spanish language
daily, Al Dia, said that
if the objective is
prevention, the results
then should indicate a
lower crime rate in the
areas where the sirens
are active.
Mora was clear that the
actions of the force
cannot be judged ahead
of time and without
fully studying the
effects.
"We must give them time.
It is difficult,
however, to obtain
results in a month if no
results are obtained in
the first week", said
Mora.
