U.S. Would Lift Sanctions
The United States is discussing
the lifting of sanctions to
several Latin American
countries, Costa Rica among
them, who do not exempt U.S.
citizens from coming under the
jurisdiction of the
International Penal Court,
according to Adolfo Franco,
assistant general manager of the
U.S. Agency for International
Development (AID).
Other nations
subject to the sanctions are
Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru,
Ecuador, Venezuela, and Mexico,
to all of whom the U.S. cut
military and economic direct
aid, which funded programs such
as the war against drug traffic
and the promotion of human
rights.
Costa Rican Minister of
Foreign Affairs Bruno Stagno
said that he was pleased with
the news, because it means that
the nations in the International
Penal Court would not be
sanctioned or excluded from the
funds of economic cooperation
for the sole fact of belonging
to the Court.
